Title: Agony in the Garden
Artist: Circle of William Hilton RA 1786-1839
Dimensions: 26.7 x 20.5cm
Cost: £1,700.00
Description: The artwork is a master study studio circle of William Hilton, RA, British, 1786-1839 – a detail of Christ from 'Agony in the Garden', after Correggio; indistinctly inscribed, in pencil at the bottom of the artwork, 'From the Duke of Wellington's Correggio'. Because William Hilton was a Royal Academician himself, it is highly likely he or his students had special access to copy this work at Apsley House. Note: The present drawing depicts a detail from Antonio da Correggio's (1489–1534) original painting of 'Agony in the Garden', part of the Wellington Collection at Apsley House [WM.1585.1948]. The present work's handling closely resembles that of a drawing by Hilton, which the British Museum collection holds. The use of black and red pencil (aux deux crayons) on paper was a common technique for 18th and 19th-century artists to capture the subtle flesh tones and dramatic light (chiaroscuro) of the High Renaissance masters.
