The artwork depicts Chepstow Castle and the River Wye as it flows towards the estuary, with the ruins of Chepstow Castle positioned on the limestone cliffs to the right. While Fielding did paint many views across South Wales, including Ewenny Priory, also an ancient site in South Wales. Interestingly, both sites share a connection to the famous artist J.M.W. Turner, who sketched and painted both Chepstow Castle and Ewenny Priory during his early tours of Wales in the 1790s

Loutherbourg was born in Strasbourg in 1740. Loutherbourg decided to become a painter. In 1767 he was elected to the French Academy. He painted landscapes, sea storms, and battles, all of which work had a celebrity above those of the specialists then working in Paris. He made his debut with the exhibition of twelve pictures, including Storm at Sunset, Night, and Morning after Rain

Giovanni was an Italian painter and engraver, who lived in England from 1755. A Founder Member of the Royal Academy of Arts, Giovanni Battista Cipriani was an Italian-born artist who designed the interior of the Academy’s first home at Somerset House. Cipriani was born in 1727 in Florence. He began his artistic training with the Anglo-Florentine artist Ignazio Hugford, who also taught his compatriot and future fellow Royal Academician Francesco Bartolozzi.
