Title: River Welland
Artist: Peter Barker RSMA
Dimensions: Image size 295 x 200mm
Cost: £650.00
Description: Oil on board signed by Peter Barker, RSMA, Uppingham, Oakham. The subject is the river Welland Barker demonstrates his signature "painterly realism". The composition is anchored by a group of skeletal, wintering trees that reach toward a soft, hazy sky, their intricate forms mirrored with delicate precision in the still waters of the Welland. The artist utilises a sophisticated palette of ochres, burnt umbers, and muted silvers to capture the damp, crisp air of a late autumn or early spring morning. From the rugged, frost-tipped grasses in the foreground to the soft, rhythmic reflections on the river’s surface, the brushwork is both confident and sensitive, providing a tactile quality that brings the landscape to life. This original work is signed by the artist in the lower-left corner and is housed in a substantial, classically styled gilt frame with a linen slip, enhancing its presence as a focal point for any traditional or contemporary interior. Peter Barker is a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists (RSMA) and is widely celebrated for his landscape and maritime subjects. His work is a staple in high-end galleries across the UK and is sought after by collectors who value the "New English" tradition of plein-air-inspired painting.

Circle of Johannes Glauber, Dutch 1646-c.1726- Classical landscape, with nymphs fleeing from the lion of Kea; oil on metal panel and very well executed, indistinctly signed with initials 'J.W.P. (lower right). The present work bears a striking resemblance to the Classical landscapes which make up Glauber's oeuvre, revealing the influence of his teacher Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), alongside figures such as Karel Dujardin (1626-1678) whom he met on his travels to Rome, and Gerard de Lairesse (1671-1711), with whom he lived and worked upon his return to Amsterdam. Glauber produced a number of very similar mythological scenes, such as those depicting Classical Landscape with Diana and her Nymphs resting after a chase'. The present scene appears to illustrate the moment in which, according to ancient Greek mythology, a lion was sent to scare the water nymphs off the island of Kea, perhaps in order to preserve the island's natural springs.

An original mid-to-late 20th-century wildlife study by the British painter L. Morgan, showcasing the artist’s signature naturalistic focus on native riverbed fauna. Looking through a window into nature, the composition relies on a deliberate asymmetry: the upper-left quadrant is grounded by a sharply defined common European kingfisher perched on a stark, angular branch. This focal point projects downward across a diagonal axis, drawing the eye toward the lower-right foreground, where fully opened white water lilies and floating lily pads anchor the scene.

Artwork oil on canvas laid on board by David Hill (1914-1977), an American artist of Dutch parentage; he grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. Parentage, who settled in Paris with his friend and fellow artist Joseph Plaskett. Hill exhibited extensively in the Paris galleries and counted amongst his patrons Cary Grant, who made a habit of purchasing David Hill’s series of egg still lifes to present to his leading ladies after each new film he made. David’s work is underscored by a superb draughtsmanship; his paintings are imbued with an often-undefinable surrealist quality and sometimes underlining menace, and his work has been collected extensively in the U.K., Paris, and the U.S. This artwork was sold directly from David Hill artists’ studios and is fresh to the market. The location depicted in the artwork is likely Tarascon-sur-Ariège in southern France. The artwork captures a panoramic vista of the surrounding countryside, characterised by rolling hills and the prominent Pyrenees mountains in the background, which aligns with the actual geography of that area.
